Tunç Erbudak:
This project was a very valuable experience for me, both personally and socially. About three weeks after joining the project, I started volunteering at a youth center half an hour from my home. This center was primarily for disadvantaged children, and I had the opportunity to contribute to their socialization, learning, and fun time.
I spent a lot of time with children up to 18 years old at the center. We played games, painted, and participated in sports activities. The children's energy and joy inspired me. The center was also open to disadvantaged women one day a week. Here, the women gathered, organized activities, and had the opportunity to express themselves. Spending time with them and listening to their diverse life stories was very educational for me.
As part of the project, we spent time with the children not only at the center but also in the villages. I was deeply moved by the limited daily lives of children in the villages. By offering them different activities, we had fun and tried to broaden their horizons. This is where I realized: some children struggle to access many things we often take for granted, things we have at our fingertips. This awareness was one of the most powerful gains of the project for me.
Besides this, cultural activities were also an unforgettable part of my experience. We all made one of Romania's famous desserts together, which was both fun and educational. We also participated in a lavender-themed activity. The color and scent of lavender made for a very peaceful day. These activities created a unique atmosphere for both the children and us.
During my stay in Romania, I also had the opportunity to visit historical and cultural sites. The castles, museums, and historical fabric of the cities taught me a great deal about the country's deep history. I was particularly impressed by the people's warmth and hospitality.
During my free time, I also had the opportunity to visit other European countries. Meeting people from different cultures and experiencing their lifestyles was a great learning experience. This not only enabled me to volunteer but also gave me the opportunity to develop my skills in a multicultural environment.
In conclusion, the ESC experience was an unforgettable journey for me, both personally and socially. Working with children and women enhanced my empathy and sense of social responsibility. It helped me understand the true value of what we have in our daily lives. This period I spent in Romania will make me a more conscious, sensitive and responsible individual in my future life.
